This year's K-fair was all about "empowering the future together". With more than 3.000 exhibitors and ca. 225.000 visitors from all over the world, it was a very international exchange on topics that shape the future: recycling and sustainability were key topics.

The plasticizer team participated in the fair as part of the BASF corporate team. Thomas Geissinger, Head of Sales Plasticizers Europe, says: "We had a great exchange with dozens of current and potential customers and discussed future business opportunities. We also felt the internationality of the fair as many companies from outside of Europe visited our booth to discuss about plasticizers."

Let’s show ‘em… that anyone can be BASF’s customer

We brought customer centricity to the doorstep of our BASF colleagues in Shanghai by putting them literally in our customers’ shoes.

Along with the local labor union, BASF hosted a Hexamoll® DINCH summer promotional event on August 22, 2019, alongside our customers Mattel Inc., LZ Stationery Co. Ltd. and Zhejiang East Asia Glove Co. Ltd.. Approximately 200 BASF colleagues participated in the event during their lunch break and were able to see how the Hexamoll® DINCH plasticizer has been deployed to create a plethora of safe, innovative, fashionable products, including in toys, gloves and erasers. This time, our colleagues were the customers – and BASF’s customers did the selling.

“Feedback from our customers Mattel Inc., LZ Stationery Co. Ltd. and Zhejiang East Asia Glove Co. Ltd. were positive,” remarked Vivien Xu, Regional Marketing Management, Petrochemicals Asia Pacific. “This event was an ideal touchpoint for us to collaborate and create a win-win situation whereby we are raising awareness of Hexamoll® DINCH’s applications within our employee community, thereby equipping them as brand ambassadors and product advocates.”

This event was an innovative way to facilitate interaction between BASF’s customers and a wider group of BASF colleagues at our Shanghai site; it also enabled our customers to obtain instant feedback on their products. Simultaneously, our colleagues got a good deal on their purchases.

Feel the Zeal: ChinaPlas 2019 customer event - Hexamoll® DINCH

I am the fly on the wall. My name is Max.

I was chilling on the ceiling of a splendid German beer hall in Guangzhou, China, one afternoon on May 22, 2019.

Suddenly, I noticed approximately 75 people below me in the venue, all mesmerized by a speaker, Ketan Joshi (Vice President, BASF Petrochemicals Asia Pacific), as he kickstarted A-CP/A’s ChinaPlas customer event focusing on Asia’s plasticizers industry. Specifically, on the product Hexamoll® DINCH.

The key takeaway messages I could ascertain from the animated discussions between customers and BASF colleagues was that: customers choose this premium product for its high product quality (i.e. safety, no contamination, trust in the brand) and supply reliability.

The customer and Hexamoll® DINCH Trusted Partner Hopefinder (Changzhou) Polymer Sci. & Tech. Co., Ltd. also gave a compelling speech on how Hexamoll® DINCH is a better choice for medical PVC compounds. There’s probably nothing more gratifying than one’s customer extoling the benefits of one’s product.

Specifically, Hopefinder highlighted the size and expected 20% growth rate of China’s medical devices and medical tubing markets, their innovations in China modified medical PVC compounding, and the PVC applications of Hopefinder. Since the year 2000, Hopefinder’s safety awareness has strengthened, recognizing the importance of non-phthalate plasticizers and high-quality additives and how vital it was for them to partner with a responsible, reputable supplier who would abide by all the industry standards and regulations. Having a trusted supplier enabled Hopefinder to focus on innovating and staying agile and versatile in its plethora of medical applications.

That’s when BASF came into the picture - year 2012. Hopefinder appreciated how BASF applied ISO9001:2015 and strictly adhered to its inspection processes and quality monitoring (inspecting every truck with incoming material and at all interim stages and inspecting the chemical and physical properties of all finished products). This assurance and confidence are key to BASF’s relationship with Hopefinder, as the customer expands its footprint to become a leading medical polymer material supplier.

As the industry’s regulatory landscape evolves, it’s BASF’s job to stay ahead of the curve.

Even I, Max, was moved by Hopefinder’s presentation, as they emphasized the tripartite cooperation: BASF being responsible for the safety evaluation of Hexamoll® DINCH and technical support thereof, thereby enabling Hopefinder to provide the biological test reports and support to its customers who, in turn, deliver safer medical devices and tubing products to end-user patients.

Michelle Feng (Head of Sales Petrochemicals, BASF China) and Vivien Xu (Regional Marketing Management Asia Pacific) also highlighted Hexamoll® DINCH’s value proposition in line with BASF’s sustainable solution steering. Hexamoll® DINCH being an Accelerator product allows BASF customers to differentiate and to get that warm feeling inside. Just like me as I watch the chuckling below me as the group wraps up with a fun Hexamoll® DINCH quiz.

As of August 8, 2019,  Chinese customers can purchase Hexamoll® DINCH, BASF's non-phthalate plasticizer, in the recently opened BASF flagship online store on the Chinese Alibaba platform

Alibaba Group Holding Limited is a Chinese multinational conglomerate, which offers several sales services via web portals. Their Chinese portal is called and was developed for domestic trade between business in China. It has become the country’s top online platform, with over 120 million registered buyers and 11 million sellers. The launch of Hexamoll® DINCH on this platform is another milestone for BASF to promote e-commerce in China. Customers can now easily purchase the raw materials for their product by just logging on the webpage and clicking the button – like it has already become a daily routine in most people’s private lives.

“Now, we are opening this new distribution channel for Hexamoll® DINCH,” said Birgit Winkler (E-CPI/M), Head of Business Management Plasticizers. “Customers will receive the BASF product with the same quality and logistics services as they would if they bought it the conventional way. By using this channel, we can especially serve smaller customers across China in a more flexible manner,” added Vivien Xu (A-CP/A), Regional Marketing Management Hexamoll® DINCH/Plasticizer, Asia Pacific.

A re-occurring issue in the Asia Pacific region is the existence of trademark infringements and commonness of counterfeit products. “The existence of the flagship store also helps to improve this situation as customers can be sure to source the original BASF product made in Germany,” concluded Winkler.
